Designer handbags and date codes

If you're a lover of designer handbags, you've probably heard the term "date code" tossed around. But what is it?

A date code is a unique identifier found inside many designer handbags. It helps you determine the approximate age of a designer handbag and verify the authenticity. It normally consists of a combination of letters and numbers depending on the brand.

Louis Vuitton: The Classic Code

Ah, Louis Vuitton — the brand that really made date codes a thing. Before March 2021, Louis Vuitton bags had a date code stamped on a leather tab inside the bag.

The first two letters represent the factory location. The first and third numbers represent the week of the year, and the second and fourth numbers represent the year. So, the bag in the photo was crafted in France during the 12th week of 2001 according to https://www.lvcodecalc.com

But, since 2021, Louis Vuitton has used a hidden chip inside the bag for authentication – no more visible date codes.

Chanel: The Hologram Sticker

Chanel handbags often feature a hologram sticker with a unique serial number. These little stickers — usually tucked away in a corner inside the bag.

Serial codes that consist of 8-digits mean the bag was made from late 2005 onwards. The first two digits indicate the year. So, the bag in the photo was made in 2019 as the number starts with ”29” according to https://chanelcodecalc.com

Like Louis Vuitton, Chanel started embedding microchips in their bags in 2021, so newer models may not have a visible hologram sticker.

Hermès: The Blind Stamp

In Hermès land, the serial number system has evolved over time, with different eras featuring distinct stamp styles. After 2015, the system became more streamlined, with letters and numbers indicating both the date and the artisan.

As there are no surrounding shapes on this handbag stamp and it starts with the letter B,  the bag in the photo was manufactured in 2023 according to https://realauthentication.com/we-authenticate-hermes

Whether you're a seasoned collector or a newcomer to the world of luxury bags, understanding date codes can enhance your appreciation and confidence in your purchase of pre-loved bags.
